Bramhall Row: Re-Making History in Portland’s West End
Welcome to Portland’s new favorite neighborhood (that is, if you like walking, eating, people-watching, historic architecture, music, art, brilliant sunsets – oh, and did we say eating?)
Nestled on upper Congress Street, in the lively area between Longfellow Square and Bramhall Square, Bramhall Row is perfectly situated. It’s in the midst of the eminently walkable, richly textured, western edge of Portland’s Arts, Cultural and Historical District.
To those who know, Portland’s West End is revered for its gorgeous 19th century architecture, endless brick sidewalks, pedestrian-friendly streets and squares, and its “too-many-to-count” eateries, shops, galleries, music venues, watering holes, coffee shops and more. A Bit of Bramhall Hill History
Bramhall Hill is located west and southwest on the downtown peninsula of Portland, Maine. The area includes the West End neighborhood, the Western Promenade and part of the Old Port downtown district. Some of the finest and most historical residences of Portland were built (and still stand!) on Bramhall Hill. Included amongst the notable residents was George Bramhall. George Bramhall moved to Portland in 1680 and bought 400 acres of land from George Cleaves, known as the “founder of Portland”. Bramhall was a Tanner by profession and set up a tannery in the area. He was killed during the French and Indian wars in 1689. CLICK HERE to read more about Bramhall Hill’s History.
